Designed by Fred Shepherd, Built by White Brothers; one of the best shipyards of the time; and launched in 1909. Owl is very much a classic yacht from Edwardian times. The many successive owners in her long life have done well to maintain her origins, especially on deck. Her ketch rig enables her to be sailed effectively with a small crew. She is moreover a sea kindly vessel that has crossed the Atlantic; very balanced and comfortable. While substantially authentic she is however no mere museum piece but a living being which can now be enjoyed by renting her in Port d’Andratx, Mallorca.

Frederick Shepherd (1869–1969) was an English boat designer. He designed 84 yachts over his 45-year career, and usually supervised the construction of each yacht. John Leather refers to Fred Shepherd as ‘….the doyen of British yacht designers and a man still remembered for the ability and beauty of his cruising yachts’. This may account for the relatively small number of designs over a long career of designing yachts. Unusually amongst yacht designers of the time, his principal focus was cruising yachts rather than racing yachts. His focus on cruising rather than racing meant that he became known for yachts which had attractive lines and better space down below than their racing equivalents.
